CANTON, N.Y. - The Wayne State men's hockey team (3-7-2) overcame a two-goal deficit and came away with a 2-2 tie at St. Lawrence (4-7-3) on Saturday night at Appleton Arena.
Matt Krug (Livonia, Mich./Texas Tornado) and Stavros Paskaris (Dearborn, Mich./Kewadin Indians) scored 1:37 apart in the third period to erase the Saints' 2-0 lead.
St. Lawrence outshot Wayne State for the second straight night, but was again unable to score on the power play. The Saints went 0-for-4 on Saturday with a man advantage and 0-for-11 in the series. SLU is also winless in its last eight games at home.
After a scoreless first period, Casey Parentau scored his sixth goal of the season at the 12:03 mark of the first period to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. He later assisted on Alex Curran's third period tally at 7:47 which put the home team ahead by a pair.
Krug cut the deficit in half with a power-play goal from Jeff Caister (Mississauga, Ont./Milton Icehawks) and Tylor Michel (Sudbury, Ont./Owen Sound Saugeen Greys) at 11:28, and Paskaris' game-tying goal from Jared Katz (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Baystate Breakers) and Derek Punches (Manchester, Mich./Texas Tornado came at the 13:05 mark.
Kyle Funkenhauser (Windsor, Ont./Surrey Eagles) made 37 saves for Wayne State, including three in overtime.
Wayne State will play a home-and-home series with Bowling Green State next weekend (Nov. 30-Dec. 1), the former of which will be contested at the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum in Detroit.
