Schenectady, N.Y. - The Wayne State University men's hockey team (0-8-2) was blanked 4-0 Saturday night at Union College's (7-5-2) Messa Rink.
In a scoreless first period, the host Dutchmen held a 13-8 shots on goal advantage as referee Mike Baker whistled nine infractions (five on WSU and four on Union).
The second period was moving along similarly to the first with no goals but only one penalty through the first 15 minutes of the stanza.
WSU's John May was assessed a slashing penalty at 15:29 and it took Union just 30 seconds to snap the scoreless draw. Lane Caffaro's second of the season was the eventual game-winner.
The Dutchmen increased their lead to 2-0 with 1:44 left in the middle period on a goal by Torren Delforte.
With exactly one minute to go in the frame, Union was assessed two penalties to one for Wayne State but the Warriors were unable to capitalize on the man-advantage.
Union held a slim 12-10 advantage in shots on goal in the second period.
Each team was assessed six penalties at the conclusion of the second period. WSU's Jason Baclig and Union's Lane Caffaro each were given five-minute fighting penalties which carry an automatic game disqualification.
Union's Matt Cook scored an unassisted goal 3:37 into the third period and Chris Potts added a power-play goal with 3:12 remaining to complete the scoring.
Wayne State junior goalie Will Hooper (Woodbridge, Ont./Wexford Raiders) made 36 saves, while Union's Kris Mayotte turned aside 25 Warrior shots.
WSU went zero-for-six on the power play, with Union scoring twice in 11 man-advantage opportunities.
The Warriors return to league play next Friday and Saturday with a two-game series at Air Force. Both games begin at 9:05 p.m. eastern and can be heard on WDTK (1400 AM) or online at wdtkam.com.
