DETROIT, Mich. - The Wayne State men's hockey team surrendered four goals within the first 24 minutes of Saturday's conference game against Bemidji State and could not recover, falling 4-2 to the Beavers at the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum.
Two of Bemidji State's four goals came short-handed, including one by Luke Erickson who became BSU's all-time leading scorer.
Erickson's first goal at 5:23 was a deflected shot that got past freshman goaltender Brett Bothwell (Red Deer, Alb./Yorkton Terriers), who had a great deal of traffic in front of him. Cody Bostock, who fired the original shot, and Travis Winter, who won the faceoff to pull the puck back to Bostock, earned assists.
The short-handed market by Erickson at 15:06 was the result of a three-on-one attack following a Wayne State turnover in the neutral zone. Chris Peluso and Blaine Jarvis each had a helper.
Matt Pope, who scored the game-winner in Friday's contest, did so again on Saturday, this time on a short-handed play. Pope's shot from the blue line deflected off Bothwell's pads and into the net, putting BSU ahead by three just over a minute into the second period.
Bemidji State's fourth goal came on a power-play tally by Ryan Miller, as he collected a rebound in front of the net off a shot from John Vadnais. Peluso also assisted on the goal.
Derek Bachynski (Belle River, Ont./Leamington Flyers) put the Warriors on the board at the 12:47 mark of the middle stanza with his fourth of the season. Jeff Caister (Mississauga, Ont./Milton Icehawks) sent the puck across the ice to Ryan Bernardi (Etobicoke, Ont./Milton Icehawks), who fired a shot from the blue line off the pads of Matt Climie. Bachynski was in position for the rebound at the goal line to finish the play.
His goal broke a scoreless streak of 162:31 and was the Warriors' first power-play tally in their last 20 chances.
Matt Krug (Livonia, Mich./Texas Tornado) recorded a short-handed marker at 16:32 to pull Wayne State to within two. Jason Baclig (Leamington, Ont./Leamington Flyers) started the play by creating a turnover at the WSU blue line. He passed it off to Bachynski, and he skated down with Krug for a two-on-one play. A centering pass to Krug set up the goal.
Wayne State played with an extra attacker for the final 1:16, but could not narrow the deficit any further.
The Warriors led the Beavers, 31-14, in shots on goal. Climie made 29 saves for BSU, while Bothwell made 10 in the first 24:42 of the game before being relieved by Will Hooper (Woodbridge, Ont./Wexford Raiders), who played a scoreless 34 minutes.
Wayne State travels to Niagara next weekend, Dec. 8-9, before returning home to take on Western Michigan on Dec. 16.
