KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Wayne State hockey team (3-10-2) suffered its third straight defeat after a 5-2 setback at Western Michigan (5-10-0) on Friday night at Lawson Arena.
Wayne State battled back from a two-goal deficit but proceeded to surrender three unanswered tallies as Western Michigan snapped a three-game skid.
Seniors Tylor Michel (Sudbury, Ont./Owen Sound Saugeen Greys), playing in his 100th career game, and Stavros Paskaris (Dearborn, Mich./Kewadin Indians) each scored their third goal of the season for the Warriors.
After a scoreless first period in which the Broncos outshot the Warriors, 12-2, the two sides combined for five goals in the middle stanza.
Western Michigan took a 2-0 lead on tallies scored 1:46 apart by Matt Clackson and Patrick Galivan. Michel's power-play goal at 11:08 from Tyler Ruel (Port Alberni, B.C./Alberni Valley Bulldogs) and Matt Krug (Livonia, Mich./Texas Tornado) cut the deficit in half, however, and Paskaris tied it up 65 seconds later with an assist from Jon Grabarek (Sterling Hts., Mich./Cedar Rapids RoughRiders).
The Broncos reclaimed the lead on a power-play marker by Tyler Ludwig at 16:42, who assisted on an insurance goal by Brian Bicek at 6:24 of the third period. An empty-net goal by Chris Clackson sealed the 5-2 victory for Western Michigan.
Shots on goal were 38-26 in favor of Western Michigan. Freshman Jerry Kuhn earned his first career victory for WMU, totaling 24 saves, while Brett Bothwell (Red Deer, Alb./Yorkton Terriers) made 33 saves for Wayne State.
These two teams will meet again at Lawson Arena on Saturday at 7:35 p.m.
