NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - The Wayne State men's hockey team (3-12-2, 1-4-0 CHA) saw its losing skid reach five games following a 4-2 defeat at Niagara (9-6-1, 3-3-1 CHA) on Friday night at Dwyer Arena.

The Purple Eagles established a 4-0 advantage until Matt Krug (Livonia, Mich./Texas Tornado) and Stavros Paskaris (Dearborn, Mich./Kewadin Indians) each scored a power-play goal late in the third. The Warriors could not close the gap any further, however, marking their first loss this season when scoring twice with a man advantage.

Niagara took a 2-0 lead on goals from Les Reaney and David Ross in the opening period, and Vince Rocco's power-play goal at 6:08 of the second stanza made it a 3-0 game. Derek Foam lit the lamp early in the third to give the Purple Eagles' a four-goal lead.

Moments into a 5-on-3 power-play, Krug spoiled Pagliero's shutout bid with his third goal of the season, a blast from just inside the blue line at 13:23 with assists credited to Tylor Michel (Sudbury, Ont./Owen Sound Saugeen Greys) and Jeff Caister (Mississauga, Ont./Milton Icehawks).

Paskaris would follow with a power-play tally just 23 seconds later, capitalizing on a loose puck in the Niagara zone and firing a wrist shot from the right circle past Pagliero.

Shots were 29-26 in favor of Wayne State, but Pagliero amassed 27 saves including 23 over the final 40 minutes. WSU netminder Brett Bothwell (Red Deer, Alb./Yorkton Terriers) totaled 23 saves.

The Warriors and Purple Eagles will face off again at Dwyer Arena on Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
