NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - The Wayne State men's hockey team (3-13-2, 1-5-0 CHA) lost its sixth straight game Saturday night, falling 2-1 at College Hockey America rival Niagara (10-4-1, 4-3-1 CHA).
All three goals were scored on power plays, including two by Niagara's Ted Cook. Jon Grabarek (Sterling Hts., Mich./Cedar Rapids RoughRiders) notched his sixth goal of the season with 17 seconds remaining, spoiling the shutout bid for rookie goaltender Adam Avramenko who totaled 20 saves for his third victory of the year.
Cook put Niagara ahead 1-0 at 16:40 of the opening period and scored again at 2:49 of the middle stanza.
Jeremy Tejchma (Muskegon, Mich./Bridgewater Bandits) and Tylor Michel (Sudbury, Ont./Owen Sound Saugeen Greys) assisted on Grabarek's marker in the third, but Wayne State could not avoid its 12th loss in its last 14 contests at Dwyer Arena.
Kyle Funkenhauser (Windsor, Ont./Surrey Eagles) matched Avramenko with 20 saves, 17 of which came in the first two periods.
Wayne State is idle until 2008 when its nine-game road trip continues at Minnesota (Jan. 4-5) and Northern Michigan (Jan. 11-12).
