Grand Forks, N.D. - The Wayne State University men's hockey team (5-9-2) lost an 8-2 decision at No. 1-ranked North Dakota (13-2-0) in the championship game of the 2003 Subway Classic hosted by UND.
The Fighting Sioux outshot the Warriors 53-15 in front of 9,475 at Engelstad Arena. UND had more shots on goal in the first period (16) than WSU had the entire game (15). Wayne State was outscored in each period (2-1 in the first, 4-1 in the second and 2-0 in the third).
UND's Ryan Hale gave the hosts a 1-0 lead 8:24 into the contest, marking the 13th time in 16 games the Warriors had fallen behind 1-0. WSU is now 2-9-2 when allowing the first goal.
Wayne State tied the game when sophomore Derek MacKay (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont./Soo Thunderbirds) scored his first goal since Oct. 24. Juniors Billy Collins (Enderby, B.C./Prince George Spruce Kings) and Nathan Rosychuk (Athabasca, Alb./Grande Prairie Storm) assisted on MacKay's fourth of the season.
The Fighting Sioux regained the lead with 8:42 left in the opening period on Tyler Palmiscno's first goal of the year. UND scored twice in the first 154 seconds of the middle stanza for a 4-1 advantage. Brandon Bochenski's 12th of the campaign was the eventual game-winner, while Lee Marvin tallied his second of the season.
The Warriors pulled within two at 4-2 when North Dakota native John Grubb (Burlington, N.D./Waterloo Black Hawks) scored his second of the season (his first was the game-winner in overtime at Michigan State on Nov. 20).
UND tacked on goals by Colby Genoway and Nick Fuher in the final four minutes of the second period for a 6-2 lead after 40 minutes. David Lundbohm scored twice in the third period against back-up goaltender Marc Carlson (Hingham, Mass./Chicago Freeze).
WSU starting netminder Matt Kelly (Hull, Mass./Topeka Scarecrows) made 25 saves on 31 shots, while Carlson turned aside 20 of North Dakota's 22 shots in the third period. Jake Brandt played nearly 50 minutes for the Fighting Sioux and stopped 9 of WSU's 11 shots. Nate Ziegelmann made four saves in the final 10:26.
Wayne State was zero-for-two with the man-advantage, while North Dakota was scoreless in three power-play opportunities.
John Grubb (Burlington, N.D./Waterloo Black Hawks) was the lone Warrior named to the Subway Classic All-Tournament team.
WSU will conclude its school-record 12-game road trip with four games in Colorado to start 2004. The Warriors play at Colorado College (Jan. 2) and at Denver (Jan. 3), before playing two league games (Jan. 8-10) at Air Force.
