Wayne State University sophomore goaltender Matt Kelly (Hull, Mass./Topeka Scarecrows) has been selected College Hockey America Defensive Player of the Week after leading the Warriors to a sweep at Alabama-Huntsville.
This is the second time this season Kelly has been honored by the league office.
In Saturday's 4-2 triumph in Huntsville, Kelly stopped 32 shots including 15 in the opening period where WSU was outshot 16-6 but had a 2-1 lead.
In Sunday's 4-1 victory, he made 48 saves to finish the weekend with 80 stops. UAH held a 12-8 lead in shots on goal in the first period but the Warriors led 1-0. Wayne State had a 3-1 advantage going into the third period when the Chargers fired 20 shots on goal with Kelly turning everyone aside.
Kelly's .964 save percentage was helped by holding UAH's power play to a 1-for-16 performance after entering the weekend at 20.5 percent efficiency.
Wayne State concludes the regular season at home this Friday (7:05 p.m.) and Saturday (3:05) at Compuware Sports Arena against the United States Air Force Academy.
