Wayne State University freshman right wing Derek MacKay (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont./Soo Thunderbirds) has been selected College Hockey America Rookie of the Week after helping the Warriors to a sweep of Air Force, 3-2 and 4-3, this past weekend.
MacKay, a 6-1, 185-pound forward had four points (three goals, one assist) in the two wins over the Falcons. He assisted on the first goal of the game on Friday and recorded his first collegiate hat trick on Saturday.
MacKay is second on the WSU squad in goals (13), tied-for-fifth in assists (11), third in points (24), first in power-play goals (6) and first goals (4). He also has the best shooting percentage of any player with at least 40 shots on goal at 16.2%.
Wayne State concludes the regular season with a home-and-home series against Findlay this weekend. "Senior Night" for the 12 members from the inaugural season will be held following Friday night's home game at Great Lakes Sports City Arena in Fraser. Saturday's regular-season finale starts at 7:05 p.m. in Findlay.
