The Wayne State University men's hockey team held its annual banquet Saturday at Hockeytown Café in downtown Detroit.
Senior left wing Dustin Kingston (Spencerville, Ont./Brockville Braves) earned team Most Valuable Player honors after leading the Warriors in goals (17) and points (41).
Kingston also won the team's "Top Gun" award for leading the squad in scoring, and the President's Award for academic success.
Senior defenseman Marc St. Jean (Orleans, Ont./Hawkesbury Hawks) earned the Most Improved award and Best Defensive Player award. St. Jean had career highs in goals (8), assists (16) and points (24), while leading all WSU blueliners in power-play goals (5) and first goals (3).
Freshman right wing Derek MacKay (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont./Soo Thunderbirds) was voted the team's Rookie of the Year after recording 28 points on 16 goals and 12 assists. He had a team-high eight power-play goals and four first goals.
Junior forward Travis Rycroft (Penticton, B.C./Merritt Centennials) was presented with the Coaches Award.
Seniors Jason Durbin (Trenton, Mich./Danville Wings) and Keith Stanich (Bethel Park, Pa./Waterloo Black Hawks) were given the Captain's Award. Durbin was a four-year team captain, while Stanich served the last three seasons as a captain.
In 2002-03, the Wayne State men's hockey team won its third consecutive College Hockey America playoff title and advanced to the NCAA Division I tournament for the first time in school history. Head coach Bill Wilkinson and staff have to replace 12 seniors for the upcoming season.
