DETROIT - Wayne State University Director of Athletics Rob Fournier announced today the signing of an agreement with Compuware Sports Arena in Plymouth, Mich., to serve as the host arena for the Warrior men's hockey team for the 2003-04 season.
"As we continue to develop our plans for an on-campus facility, Compuware is a logical next step in that development," stated Fournier. "The strength of youth hockey, the surrounding fan base and the long-standing support of community leaders like Peter Karmanos make this site a great opportunity for the winning tradition of Warrior hockey."
"We are happy to have Wayne State aboard," commented Compuware Sports Arena General Manager Steve St. John. "I think this is a great fit and rounds out the wide range of hockey offered here at the Compuware Sports Arena."
Wayne State recently completed its fourth season with the school's first NCAA tournament appearance. The Warriors won their third consecutive College Hockey America (CHA) playoff championship.
WSU has compiled a 72-58-11 record under the guidance of head coach Bill Wilkinson, who ranks in the top 30 all-time of victories by an NCAA hockey coach.
This past season, Wayne State played two home games at Compuware, two at the Taylor Sportsplex, two at Joe Louis Arena and the remaining home games at Great Lakes Sports City Arena in Fraser.
The Warriors are tentatively scheduled to commence the 2003-04 season with an exhibition contest against the University of Windsor on Saturday, October 4. The University also plans to host doubleheaders with the women's hockey program next season.
