Brett Bothwell, a native of Red Deer, Alberta, has signed a national letter of intent to attend Wayne State and play for the men's hockey team beginning in the fall of 2006. Head coach Bill Wilkinson made the announcement today (June 16).
Bothwell, a 5-10, 170-pound goaltender, led the Yorkton Terriers to the championship game of the 2006 Royal Bank Cup with a 13-3 playoff mark, a 2.37 goals-against average and a .907 save percentage.
During the regular season in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, Bothwell compiled a 27-10-3 (2-OTL) record with a 2.42 gaa and a .919 save percentage. He made 1158 saves for an average of 27.44 saves per 60 minutes. His 27 victories tied for second in the SJHL while both his gaa and minutes played was third in the league. Bothwell also recorded two shutouts in his 43 games played.
In 12 games the previous season with the Terriers, he had a 3-4-3 record with a 2.37 gaa, a .912 save percentage and one shutout.
He received the team's Most Popular Player award following the 2005-06 campaign. Bothwell also participated for Team West in the first ever CJAHL Prospects Game held this past December.
The youngest of Bruce and Bobbie Bothwell's four children, Brett graduated in 2004 from Hunting Hills High School in Red Deer. He plans to major in business at WSU.
Wayne State will have 18 returning letterwinners this fall in hopes of improving upon last season's 6-23-6 record. Goalie Matt Kelly, defensemen Steve Kovalchik and Greg Poupard, and forward John May have graduated from last year's team.
