ALLENDALE, Mich. - In its first competition of 2007, the Wayne State men's swimming and diving squad defeated Grand Valley State, 156-89, on Friday evening.
The Warriors took second and third in the 400 medley relay, as the combination of Luiz Pacheco, A.J. Erard, Jared Troyer, and Justin Shields finished second with a time of 3:37.49, while the foursome of Cauli Bedran, Christer Tour, Bruno Blanco, and Per Bergstrom turned in a third-place time of 3:38.28.
Matt Leix (10:01.24) and Troyer (10:01.33) went one-two in the 1000 free, while James Ekleberry finished fourth (10:10.53).
Guilherme Veiga was victorious in the 200 free (1:46.56), and three Warriors - Bedran (22.10), Tiago Oliveira (22.17), and Blanco (22.84) - swept the top three finishes in the 50 free.
A.J. Erard finished in first place in the 200 individual medley (1:58.64), as did Blanco in the 100 butterfly (52.56).
Oliveira (48.75) and Bergstrom (49.32) finished first and second, respectively, in the 100 free, and Wayne State swept the first three places in the 100 backstroke with Bedran (53.36), Pacheco (54.05), and Leix (55.80).
Veiga topped the field in the 500 free (4:42.97), followed by Troyer in second (4:52.18) and Ekleberry in fourth (4:59.59).
In the diving competitions, Chris Totten won the one-meter and placed second in the three-meter, while Dan Fleming took second on the one-meter board.
Tour won the 100 breaststroke (59.07), and the Warriors finished off the victory with a first-place swim in the 400 free relay (Bergstrom, Oliveira, Alex Davidson, Sebastian Rzepa - 3:13.62).
Wayne State will compete at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow at Calvin.
