DETROIT, Mich. - The Wayne State men's swimming squad defeated Calvin College, 135-86, on Saturday afternoon at the Matthaei Aquatic Center, marking the third straight dual meet triumph for the Warriors.
WSU won nine straight swims to clinch the victory, highlighted by Sean Smith's (Auburn, Mich./Bay City Western) victory in the 100 backstroke, which eclipsed the NCAA "A" qualifying standard and missed setting a pool record by .05 seconds.
The 400 medley relay combination of Cauli Bedran (Rio de Janiero, Brazil), Matt Victor (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay), Brett Salogar (Bay City, Mich./Western), and Tim Giblin (Midland, Mich./Midland Dow) came in first place (3:37.93), followed by the foursome of Alex Guymer (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester), Jay Koehler (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lake Shore), Alex Davidson (Napoleon, Mich./Jackson), and Sebastian Rzepa (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley) in second (3:42.49).

In the 50 free, Giblin led the pack (22.10) with Tiago Oliveira (Raul Soares, Brazil) in third (22.37) and Jamal Roberts (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech) in fourth (24.09).
Wayne State swept the top three spots in the next three events - the 400 individual medley, the 100 butterfly, and the 100 free.
Matt Carlson (Plymouth, Mich./Canton) won the 400 IM (4:18.58) with Davidson (4:30.26) and Marshall (4:36.30) in tow. Bedran (52.74), Oliveira 53.89, and Ben Dueweke (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) (55.02) swept the 100 fly, and the trio of Per Bergstrom (Fagersta, Sweden) (48.91), Salogar (50.86), and Giblin (51.32) took the 100 free.
After Smith won the 100 back with Guymer finishing second (57.96), the Warriors secured the victory with a one-two-three finish in the 500 free. Ekleberry led the way (4:59.24) with Rzepa second (5:04.33) and Shields third (5:09.28).
