DETROIT, Mich. - The Wayne State men's swimming and diving team earned a 127-95 victory over GLIAC foe Ashland on Senior and Parent Recognition Night at the Matthaei Aquatic Center on Friday.
The Warriors clinched the dual meet win with first-place finishes in each of the first nine events.
The foursome of Luiz Pacheco, Christer Tour, Bruno Blanco, and Cauli Bedran set a WSU record and achieved an NCAA "A" qualifier with a first-place time of 1:32.39 in the 200 medley relay.
Guilherme Veiga won the 1000 free (9:42.78), while teammates Matt Leix finished third (10:00.29) and James Ekleberry fourth (10:04.05).
Wayne State swept the top four spots in the 200 free, led by Tiago Oliveira (1:42.53) who earned an NCAA "B" cut in the win. Alex Davidson finished second (1:47.31), followed by Sebastian Rzepa (1:47.57) and Justin Shields (1:49.61).
Bedran (21.89) and Per Bergstrom (22.02) went one-two in the 50 free, as did A.J. Erard (4:09.54) and Jared Troyer (4:12.62) in the 400 individual medley.
Three Wayne State divers topped the field in the one-meter competition, as Dan Fleming finished first and made his NCAA "A" cut with a score of 294.38. Chris Totten came in second (288.10) and Cayce Bolt third (280.35). Totten would later narrowly make an "A" cut with a three-meter score of 285.15.
Blanco won the 200 fly (1:56.89), while Oliveira (46.71) and Bergstrom (47.67) went one-two in the 100 free. Pacheco (1:57.16) and Leix's (1:58.70) sweep of the top two finishes in the 200 backstroke sealed the victory for the Warriors.
Wayne State will look to defend its conference title at the GLIAC Championships, hosted by Ashland, on Feb. 21-24.
