JENISON, Mich. - Despite winning six of the seven events on Friday evening, the Wayne State men's swimming and diving team remains in second place after three days at the 2009 GLIAC Championships, hosted by Grand Valley State at Jenison High School.
The Lakers lead the Warriors, 624.5-607, through Friday's final swims. Ashland is in third place (300), followed by Indianapolis (266), Hillsdale (258), Lewis (167), Findlay (163) and Northern Michigan (103).
In the 400 individual medley, Matt Carlson (Plymouth, Mich./Canton) took second and made an NCAA "A" qualifying time (4:03.22). Justin Rauhoff (Richland, Mich./Comstock) placed 13th (4:27.03) and Jay Koehler (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lake Shore) came in 14th (4:28.91).
Duarte Mourao (Loures, Portugal) won the 100 butterfly (48.75) while Ben Dueweke (Macomb, Mich./Dakota), who improved upon his earlier "B" cut, came in seventh (50.70). Alex Davidson (Napoleon, Mich./Jackson) finished 14th (52.23).
Sebastian Rzepa (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley) improved his earlier "A" qualifier with a first-place time of 1:40.25 in the 200 free. Justin Shields (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) won the consolation final and placed ninth overall (1:42.83).
Wayne State accumulated 68.5 points in the 100 breaststroke. Jesper Akesson (Malmo, Sweden) won the event with a time of 55.33, improving his "A" cut and breaking Christer Tour's 2008 GLIAC record. Matthew Laschuk (Tecumseh, Ont./Academie Ste. Cecile) took second and made a national "A" qualifier (57.24), Per Bergstrom (Fagersta, Sweden) finished fifth (59.07), Matt Victor (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) tied for sixth (59.18), and Koehler placed 12th (1:00.69).
In the 100 backstroke, Sean Smith (Auburn, Mich./Bay City Western) claimed first place and a GLIAC record (48.61). Cauli Bedran (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) and Jimmy Lee (Windsor, Ont./Riverside) improved their earlier "B" times and finished fourth (50.44) and seventh (51.88), respectively.
Mourao, Fernando Costa (Porto, Portugal), Shields, and Rzepa won the 800 free relay (6:41.64), setting school and GLIAC records. Mourao also made a national "A" cut in the 200 free with a leadoff time of (1:40.34).
Cayce Bolt (Sterling Hts., Mich./Warren Mott) won his second consecutive conference title in one-meter diving (488.15), while Mike Elliott (Washington, Mich./Romeo) finished third (408.05).
The 2009 GLIAC Championships wrap up on Saturday. The preliminary round begins at 10:30 a.m. and the finals will start at 6:00 p.m.
