Marquette, Mich. - The Wayne State University men's swimming and diving squad is in first place (out of seven schools) after day one of the 2006 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) championship being held at Northern Michigan University's Physical Education Instructional Facility (PEIF) Pool.

The Warriors recorded 106 points in only two events compared to Indianapolis (58) and Grand Valley (53). Trailing the top three are Ashland (44), Gannon (43), Lewis (41) and Findlay (24).

WSU began the meet with a GLIAC meet and pool record time of 1:33.89 in the 200 medley relay. The winning quartet consisted of senior Luiz Pacheco (Curitiba, Brazil), senior Mathias Isaksson (Vasteras, Sweden), junior Bruno Blanco (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) and freshman Per Bergstrom (Fagersta, Sweden).

Wayne State took the top three spots in the 1000 free and five in the top 11. junior Nick Ingrao (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln) won first place in a GLIAC meet and pool record time of 9:26.69. Freshman Guilherme Veiga (Vinton, Va./William Byrd) was second (9:26.92), with senior Nick Markou (Canton, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) placing third (9:39.66). Freshman Argent Palumbo (Clinton Twp., Mich./Fraser) was 10th (10:10.67) while sophomore Jeff Marshall (Berkley, Mich.) was 11th (10:11.72).

The GLIAC championship continues with prelims on Thursday starting at 10:30 a.m.
