DETROIT - The Wayne State men's swimming and diving team started a strong defense of their Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference title by opening a 52-point lead after the first two events of the GLIAC Championships Wednesday night at the Matthaei Aquatic Center.

The Warriors jumped ahead by grabbing four of the top five places in the 1000 freestyle.

Defending 1000 free champ and conference record-holder, senior Christian Erard (Troy, Mich./Univ. of Detroit-Jesuit), could not hold off teammate Nick Ingrao (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln), as the sophomore won his first GLIAC championship in a time of 9:30.62.

Erard touched at 9:31.25, and junior Nick Markou (Canton, Mich./ Redford Catholic Central) had a personal-best 9:36.24 to take third-place honors.

Sophomore Jared Troyer (Portage, Mich./Central) grabbed fifth place at 9:43.64, becoming the fourth Warrior in the event to break the old Matthaei pool record.

Freshman Jeff Marshall (Berkley, Mich.) capped off WSU scoring with his 10th place finish (10:19.86).

Markou had little time to recover as he anchored the third-place 200 medley relay team that included backstroker David Lutz (Rochester, Mich./Adams), breaststroker A.J. Erard (Troy, Mich./Univ. of Detroit-Jesuit), and flyer Bruno Blanco (Rio de Janiero, Brazil/Princesa Isabel).

The Warriors finished at 1:36.41, just behind winner Indianapolis and Grand Valley State.

The Warriors finished with 106 points on the day, with Grand Valley State at 54 points. Ashland and Indianapolis each had 49 points.

A full schedule of events set for Thursday, beginning with diving at 9 a.m.
