MARQUETTE, Mich. - Winning its third GLIAC Championship in the last four years, the Wayne State men's swimming and diving team finished with 773 points, 76 ahead of second-place Indianapolis following Saturday's final events at Northern Michigan.
With both the women's and men's teams winning the conference titles, Wayne State becomes just the second school (Oakland) in GLIAC history to win both titles in the same year.
For the fifth consecutive year, head coach Sean Peters earned GLIAC Men's Coach of the Year. He is tied with his former coach, Oakland University's Pete Hovland, for most Coach of the Year awards in GLIAC history. Peters also earned the distinction on the women's side for the first time in his career following this year's championship.
Diver Dan Fleming finished in fourth place in the three-meter competition with a score of 333.55.
The Warriors swept the top three spots in the 1650 free, which was won by Guilherme Veiga (15:56.06) with Nick Ingrao (15:59.32) finishing second and Jared Troyer (16:18.87) third. Jeff Marshall placed eighth (17:06.23), Argent Palumbo came in 11th (17:19.97), and Brett Salogar rounded out the field in 16th (18:20.71).
Matt Leix finished in fifth place in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:57.46. Greg Scully took fifth in the "B" final (13th in scoring) in 2:08.82.
In the 100 free, Per Bergstrom came in eighth place in the "A" final (48.41). Tim Giblin (48.33) won the "B" final, while Sebastian Rzepa (48.57) and Luiz Pacheco finished third and seventh, respectively, in the "B" heat.
Third and fourth place in the 200 breaststroke went to A.J. Erard (2:09.01) and Mathias Isaksson (2:09.65), respectively.
Bruno Blanco came in second place in the 200 fly with a time of 1:53.41, with Troyer placing sixth (1:55.53) and Salogar 16th (2:04.42).
The Warrior foursome of Blanco, Giblin, Bergstrom, and Rzepa took third in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:10.68.
Six Warriors (Blanco, Erard, Ingrao, Markou, Troyer, Veiga) will compete at the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis, March 8-11.
