Men's Swimming and Diving Performs Well In First Day At EMU

YPSILANTI, Mich. - In the first day of the Eastern Michigan Invitational on Friday, the Wayne State men's swimming and diving team achieved several national qualifiers and set two school records.

Guilherme Veiga eclipsed the NCAA "A" qualifying standard in the 1650 free, placing third with a time of 15:52.59. Jared Troyer came in fourth (16:05.60) and James Ekleberry in sixth (16:20.41), with both swimmers earning "B" cuts.

Matt Leix finished fourth in the 200 backstroke, turning in a time of 1:55.21.

In the 100 free, Per Bergstrom finished ninth and narrowly earned a "B" cut with a time of 47.04, while Tim Giblin placed 10th in 47.25. Sebastian Rzepa and Alex Davidson finished 13th (47.55) and 14th (47.66), respectively.

A.J. Erard's time of 2:08.03 in the 200 breaststroke was good for seventh place and an NCAA "B" cut.

Cayce Bolt finished sixth (255.60) in the three-meter diving competition, while Dan Fleming took ninth (232.58) and Rich McIntyre placed 11th (172.65).

In the final event of the day, the Warriors set a new school record and qualified for nationals in the 400 free relay, as the combination of Cauli Bedran, Giblin, Bergstrom, and Rzepa placed fourth in 3:04.67. Bedran's leadoff time of 45.93 set a new school record for the 100 free.

Wayne State and the rest of the field will return to the pool tomorrow (Dec. 2) at Eastern Michigan.
