YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Wayne State men's swimming and diving team took third place at the Eastern Michigan Invitational.
WSU set three school records and earned multiple NCAA qualifying times in the final day of competition on Saturday.
The host Eagles won the event by a large margin (1196.5), followed by North Dakota (733) and the Warriors (629.5). Kalamazoo (420), Allegheny (223.5), Calvin (219), Michigan (200), Waterloo (144.5), and Findlay (69) rounded out the field.
Wayne State finished second, earned an NCAA "A" qualifier, and set a new school record in the 200 medley relay (1:32.61) with the combination of Cauli Bedran, Christer Tour, Alex Davidson, and Tim Giblin.
A.J. Erard earned his "A" cut in the 400 IM with a third-place time of 4:03.06. Jared Troyer made a "B" cut, finishing fifth in a time of 4:05.07.
The Warriors took sixth through ninth in the 200 free - Sebastian Rzepa (1:44.21), Guilherme Veiga (1:44.51), Matt Leix (1:45.13), and Justin Shields (1:45.28).
Tour tied-for-third in the 100 breaststroke (58.43), and Per Bergstrom took ninth place (59.87).
Bedran placed third in the 100 backstroke, improving upon his previous "B" qualifier with a time of 51.80.
The foursome of Troyer, Veiga, Leix, and Rzepa finished fourth in the 800 free relay (6:57.18), with their teammates - Shields, Erard, James Ekleberry, and Jeff Marshall - not far behind in sixth (7:10.95).
Bedran, Giblin, Bergstrom, and Davidson set a new WSU record and narrowly missed an "A" cut in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:23.66. Leading off the relay in 21.10 earned Bedran a school record in the 50 free, besting a 26-year-old mark of 21.31 set by Gary Bice in 1980. His time was also an NCAA "B" qualifier.
Veiga and Troyer finished fifth (4:36.58) and seventh (4:39.14), respectively, in the 500 free, while Leix took 10th place (4:41.98) and James Ekleberry finished 11th (4:44.95). Both Troyer and Leix earned "B" cuts with their swims.
In the 200 IM, Erard swam to a fourth-place finish (1:54.41).
Giblin posted a time of 21.27 in the 50 free, finishing in seventh place.
In the one-meter diving competiton, Cayce Bolt placed sixth (239.10) and Dan Fleming finished 10th (198.55).
In the final event of the day, the 400 medley relay, the team of Bedran, Tour, Davidson, and Giblin finished in fourth place (3:28.53).
Wayne State's next meet will be at Grand Valley State on Jan. 12.
