YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Wayne State men's swimming team held onto its second-place position after the second day of competition at the EMU Invitational on Saturday, falling to the host Eagles by 558 points.

Eastern Michigan (1224 points) has won this event for the past nine years. Wayne State (666) finished ahead of Kalamazoo (382.5), Calvin (364), Allegheny (350.5), Waterloo (329), Findlay (164), Michigan (80), Oakland (63), and Penn State Behren (46).

The relay team of Matt Leix, Mathias Isaksson, Bruno Blanco, and Per Bergstrom finished second in the 200 medley relay (1:33.96), .27 seconds behind the Eastern relay team.

Jared Troyer took third in the 400 individual medley (4:04.34), earning an NCAA Championship "B" qualifier. Guilherme Veiga (4:11.36) also earned a "B" qualifier with his sixth-place finish in the event, and A.J. Erard finished seventh (4:14.44).

Bruno Blanco earned an "A" qualifier by winning the 100 butterfly in a time of 49.60, just .03 second shy of his own WSU varsity record.

Nick Markou finished sixth in the 200 free (1:44.20), and Sebastian Rzepa finished ninth (1:46.65).

Isaksson (58.32) and Bergstrom (58.76) took the second and third spots, respectively, in the 100 breaststroke, and Leix finished third in the 100 backstroke (53.62).

WSU took third in the 800 free relay in 6:57.20 (Markou, Blanco, Troyer, Veiga) and second in the 200 free relay in 1:25.48 (Rzepa, Brett Salogar, Greg Scully, Jeff Marshall).

Veiga finished third in the 500 free (4:36.08), Isaksson finished third in the 200 I.M. (1:55.87), Blanco took fifth in the 50 free (21.72), and the relay team of Markou, Erard, Nick Ingrao, and Tim Giblin finished second in the 400 medley relay (3:26.70).

The Warriors will host GLIAC opponent Grand Valley State to begin 2006 on Friday, Jan. 13.
