Preliminary Results

ASHLAND, Ohio - The Wayne State men's swimming squad has eight "A" finals qualifiers for Thursday night's events after strong performances in the morning preliminaries.

In the first event of the day, the 200 freestyle relay team of Alex Davidson (Napoleon, Mich./Jackson), A.J. Erard (Troy, Mich./Royal Oak Shrine), Brett Salogar (Bay City, Mich./Western), and Greg Scully (Livonia, Mich./Churchill) finished in seventh place (1:32.93).

Matt Leix (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) was one of four Warriors to qualify for the "A" finals in the 500 free, turning in a second-place time of 4:42.22. Guilherme Veiga (Vinton, Va./William Byrd) and James Ekleberry (Rochester Hills, Mich./Avondale) finished fourth (4:45.44) and fifth (4:45.67), respectively, and Sebastian Rzepa (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley) came in seventh (4:46.96). Justin Shields' (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) 13th-place time of 4:50.80 puts him in tonight's "B" final.

Davidson (1:58.47) and Erard (1:58.53) each qualified for the "B" final in the 200 individual medley.

Four Warriors made the "A" final for the 50 free as well, led by Tiago Oliveira (Raul Soares, Brazil) who posted a second-place time of 21.22. Cauli Bedran (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) finished fourth (21.70), while Luiz Pacheco (Curitiba, Brazil) and Bruno Blanco (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) rounded out the "A" field in seventh (21.93) and eighth (21.94).

Meanwhile, Christer Tour (Farsta, Sweden) came in ninth place (21.98) and Per Bergstrom (Fagersta, Sweden) finished 12th (22.22), both qualifying for the 50 free "B" final.

The 400 medley relay combination of Scully, Erard, Salogar, and Bergstrom turned in a fourth-place time of 3:43.64.

The finals for these events will take place Thursday evening beginning at 6:00 p.m. Through Wednesday, Wayne State is in first place with 151 points, 49 ahead of Grand Valley State.
