ASHLAND, Ohio - Ten individuals on the Wayne State men's swimming and diving team qualified for Saturday's "A" finals at the GLIAC Championship.
David Fontecchio (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) came in eighth in the 1000 free (10:38.68), the first event of the day.
In the 200 back, Matt Leix (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) and Luiz Pacheco (Curitiba, Brazil) qualified for the "A" final in fourth (1:56.24) and eighth (1:58.38), respectively. Greg Scully (Livonia, Mich./Churchill) made the "B" final in 16th (2:12.55).
Three Warriors earned "A" qualifiers in the 100 free, led by Tiago Oliveira (Raul Soares, Brazil) in second (46.93). Cauli Bedran (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) finished fourth (47.29) and Sebastian Rzepa (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley) eighth (47.59). Making the "B" final were Alex Davidson (Napoleon, Mich./Jackson) in 14th (47.94) and Per Bergstrom (Fagersta, Sweden) in 15th (48.18).
Christer Tour (Farsta, Sweden) came in fourth (2:10.29) in the 200 breaststroke, and A.J. Erard (Troy, Mich./Royal Oak Shrine) turned in an eighth-place time of 2:13.03.
Jared Troyer's (Portage, Mich./Central) time of 1:52.92 was good for second in the 200 butterfly, while Bruno Blanco (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) placed sixth (1:56.76). Brett Salogar (Bay City, Mich./Western) finished 14th (2:05.19) to make the "B" final.
The Wayne State 400 free relay team of Pacheco, Justin Shields (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay), Davidson, and Bergstrom came in second (3:14.63).
Wayne State will seek its second straight GLIAC title as the final events begin tonight at 6:00 p.m.
