BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Wayne State men's swimming and diving team, in third place through day one of the NCAA Championships, will look to gain ground on the top two teams following a successful preliminary round on Thursday.
Two relays and two individuals qualified for tonight's "A" finals, including Wayne State's school-record setting 400 medley relay team of Luiz Pacheco (Curitiba, Brazil), Christer Tour (Farsta, Sweden), Bruno Blanco (Rio de Janiero, Brazil), and Cauli Bedran (Rio de Janiero, Brazil), which finished fifth (3:23.34).
The 200 free relay combination of Bedran, Tiago Oliveira (Raul Soares, Brazil), Blanco, and Pacheco finished eighth with a time of 1:23.75.
A.J. Erard's (Troy, Mich./Royal Oak Shrine) eighth-place time of 4:04.25 puts him in the "A" final of the 400 individual medley, while Jared Troyer (Portage, Mich./Central) finished 10th (4:04.83) to make the "B" final.
In the 100 butterfly, Blanco came in sixth place (49.55) to qualify for the "A" final.
Oliveira came in 19th (1:43.05) in the 200 free, and Sebastian Rzepa (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley) finished 32nd (1:45.00).
