Two Wayne State swimmers, sophomore Guilherme Veiga (Vinton, Va./William Byrd) and freshman Elaina Hogle (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood), were named the GLIAC Men's and Women's Swimmers of the Week, respectively, following their performances at the Oakland University Tri-Meet this past Saturday.
Veiga took two first-place finishes at the Tri-Meet, leading the field in the 1000-yard freestyle (9:38.37) - over 13 seconds ahead of the second-place swimmer - and the 500-yard freestyle (4:42.83). His time in the 1000 free made the NCAA "B" qualifying standard.
Hogle set a new Wayne State record in the 200-yard individual medley, finishing in a second-place time of 2:08.34 and beating the old record by .42. She also won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:07.92, missing the WSU record by .20, and anchored the second-place 400-yard freestyle relay team (3:40.25) with a split time of 53.28. Hogle's times in the 200 IM and 200 fly were under the NCAA "B" qualifying standard.
Wayne State's next competition will be at Indianapolis on Saturday, Nov. 11.
