West Bloomfield, Mich. - The Wayne State men's tennis team's continued Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play with an 8-1 win over Michigan Tech at The Sports Club of West Bloomfield Friday afternoon.
WSU (4-3, 2-0 GLIAC) took a 3-0 lead after taking three hard fought matches from Michigan Tech (2-10, 0-1 GLIAC) in doubles competition. The No. 1 tandem of freshman Johan Maubacq (Bussy St. Georges, France) and senior Donavon Mitchell (Detroit, Mich./Mumford) edged Brett Girard and Matt Tronnes 9-8. Sophomore Antoine Marenaud (Bordeaux, France/Camille Jullian) and senior Alejandro Gomez (Comitan Chiapas, Mexico/Instituto Moderno Comitan) held off Brandon Ellefson and Alan Parenteau, 8-5 at the No. 2 position while the No. 3 freshman squad of Eric Szyzlowski (Canton, Mich./Canton) and Felipe Fronseca (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Hope) took out Justin Foley and Christopher Verhulst, 8-5.
WSU was not pushed to the limit during the singles play winning 5-of-6 six matches in straight sets. Marenaud downed Girard, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 1 position while Maubacq defeated Ellefson, 6-0, 6-2, at the No. 2 slot. Mitchell upended Parenteau, 6-1, 6-2, at No.3 while Gomez shutout Verhulst, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 4 slot. Szyzlowski also defeated Foley, 6-2, 6-3 to secure the victory.
WSU continues conference play at The Sports Club of West Bloomfield with a home dual match against Lake Superior State on Saturday, March 22 at 2:00 p.m.
