DETROIT - The Wayne State University men's tennis team (3-2 overall, 1-0 GLIAC) began the GLIAC portion of its 2006 schedule with an 8-1 victory over the University of Findlay Oilers (6-9 overall, 0-3 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon at Eastside Racquet Club in Detroit.
The Warriors led 2-1 after doubles and recorded triumphs in all six singles matches.
The No.1 doubles team of senior Sebastien Foka (Choisy-le-Roi, France) and junior Donavon Mitchell (Detroit, Mich./Mumford) recorded an 8-4 win, while the second doubles duo of junior Arthur Carrilho (Joao Pessoa, Brazil) and freshman Matt Fisher (Shelby Twp., Mich./Eisenhower) were 8-5 victors.
Findlay's lone win came at third doubles were Steve Fox and Matt Thomas were 8-4 winners of WSU's tandem of junior Ryan Buck (Shelby Twp., Mich./Utica) and senior Adam Williams (Northville, Mich.).
Foka won at first singles 6-0, 6-1, with Mitchell claiming a three-set win (6-3, 3-6, 6-2) at second singles. Carrilho won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3, while Fisher was a 6-4, 7-6 (8-5 in tiebreaker) winner at fourth singles. Williams won 6-4, 7-6 (8-4) at fifth singles and Buck recorded a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles.
Wayne State continues conference action with a home match on Sunday, March 26 vs. Mercyhurst College (7-6 overall, 1-2 GLIAC) at Eastside Racquet Club beginning at 11 a.m.
