Erie, Pa. - The Wayne State men's tennis team (8-8 overall, 3-4 GLIAC) lost a tough 5-4 match at Mercyhurst (13-5, 5-2) Saturday afternoon at the Westwood Racquet Club. The loss snapped the Warriors' three-match winning streak.
The singles matches were even at three apiece as Alejandro Gomez (Comitan Chiapas, Mexico) won his sixth straight match as he defeated Mijo Cotic, 6-0, 6-3, at #3 singles. Ryan Buck (Shelby Twp., Mich./Utica) was victorious, 6-3, 6-3, at #5 singles and Kevin Turnbull (Shelby Twp., Mich./Warren DeLaSalle) was also victorious, 6-3, 6-4.
The difference was doubles play as the #2 team of Gomez/ Arthur Carrilho (Joao Pessaoa, Brazil) defeated the team of Cotic/Kyle King, 8-3. The #1 doubles team for Mercyhurst - ranked fourth in the Great Lakes Region - featuring Mariano Fava and Lee Michael Marnik defeated the duo Antoine Marenaud (Bordeaux, France) and Donavon Mitchell (Detroit, Mich./Mumford), 8-3, for their 15th straight win.
Wayne State will compete at the GLIAC Championships, held in Midland, Mich., on April 21-22.
