Grand Rapids, Mich. - The #43 Wayne State men's tennis team dropped a close 5-4 non-conference decision to #23 Aquinas of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Saturday afternoon at the MVP Sports & Fitness Center. Sophomore Antoine Marenaud (Bordeaux, France/Camille Jullian) won his team-high 12th consecutive singles match with a 6-2, 6-3, victory over Jordan O'Neill at the No. 2 position.
Wayne State (7-7) put forth a valiant effort but lost 2-of-3 doubles matches to Aquinas (17-2). The Warriors lone win came at the No. 1 position as freshman Johan Maubacq (Bussy St. Georges, France) and senior Donavon Mitchell (Detroit, Mich./Mumford) took out O'Neill and Tuan-anh Tran, 8-4. Marenaud and senior Alejandro Gomez (Comitan Chiapas, Mexico/Instituto Moderno Comitan) fell, 8-4, to Patrick Bruining and John Telfer at No. 2 while the No. 3 tandem of sophomore Kevin Turnbull Shelby Twp., Mich./Warren DeLaSalle) and freshman Eric Szydlowski (Canton, Mich./Canton) came up short, 8-6, to Dan Doerrfeld and Jason Beydoun.
WSU could not overcome the 2-1 doubles deficit during singles play splitting the six matches with AC 3-3. In addition to Marenaud's straight set win, Mitchell held off Tran, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, while Gomez downed Telfer, 6-3, 7-5, at the No. 3 and No. 4 spots respectively. However, Maubacq took the first set in his No. 1 match with Bruining but eventually fell in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, while Eric Szydlowski lost in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, to Beydoun at No. 6. At No. 5, Trunbull also took the first set against Doerrfeld, 6-3, but retired at 3-3 in the second set.
WSU resumes conference play with a home dual match against #16 Northwood on Monday, April 14 at 1:00 p.m.
