West Bloomfield, Mich. - The #43 Wayne State men's tennis team's Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) upset bid fell short as the Warriors dropped a tough 5-4 decision to league-leading #16 Northwood Monday afternoon at The Sports Club of West Bloomfield. Sophomore Antoine Marenaud (Bordeaux, France/Camille Jullian) won his team-high 13th consecutive singles match in impressive fashion with a 7-6, 6-1, straight set win over #8 regionally ranked Bertrand Vigouroux at the No. 2 position.

Wayne State concluded the regular season with an 7-8 (4-3 GLIAC) record while Northwood improved to 8-2 overall and remains unbeaten in conference play at 6-0.

WSU opened the match taking 2-of-3 doubles matches over Northwood's top-two regionally ranked pairings. At the No. 1 position, freshman Johan Maubacq (Bussy St. Georges, France) and senior Donavon Mitchell (Detroit, Mich./Mumford) took out #2 Peter Kazianschuetz and Pierre Martiner Bot , 8-3, handing the duo only their third loss of the season. Marenaud and senior Alejandro Gomez (Comitan Chiapas, Mexico/Instituto Moderno Comitan) rolled over #4 ranked Vigouroux and Olivier Brignoli, 8-1, at the No. 2 position giving the NU tandem its first conference loss. The No. 3 freshman squad of Felipe Fonseca (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Hope) and freshman Eric Szydlowski (Canton, Mich./Canton) came up short, 8-4, to Alex Minicozzi and Carlos Canudas.

The Warriors increased its lead to 4-2 during singles play as Maubacq rallied from a set down to upend #5 regionally ranked Kazianschuetz, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 1 in addition to Marenaud's win at No. 2. However, WSU could not hold off Northwood's rally as Mitchell fell, 7-5, 6-1, to Brignoli at No. 3 while freshman Marlon Leone (Holly, Mich./Holly) was dispatched, 6-1, 6-2 , by Carlos Canudas at the No. 6 position. Gomez took the first set but lost in three sets, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, to Bot at No. 4 leaving match dead locked at 4-4. After dropping the first set, Szydlowski forced a third set but could not complete the comeback falling to Minicozzi, 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 at the No. 5 slot.

WSU heads to Midland, Mich. this weekend for the 2008 GLIAC Tournament held April 19-20 at the Midland Tennis Center. Match opponents and times are to be determined.
