Erie, Pa. - The Wayne State University men's cross country team finished second out of 12 schools at the 2007 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship Saturday at Pleasant Ridge Park in Girard, Pa.
Grand Valley won the team championship with 19 points, while the Warriors edged Ashland, 81-85, for second place. Saginaw Valley was fourth with 102 points and was followed by Hillsdale (127), Ferris State (139), Northwood (206), Michigan Tech (208), Lake Superior (265), Findlay (269), Mercyhurst (304) and Gannon (378).
Junior Abdullah Saleh (Dearborn, Mich./Fordson) earned First Team All-GLIAC honors after finishing third in a time of 25:42.79 (top seven earn First Team All-League accolades). Saleh was a First Team recipient in 2005 (5th) and a Second Team honoree in 2006 (10th).
Senior Kevin Christensen (Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield) earned Second Team All-GLIAC honors for the second time in his career (was 8th in 2005) with a time of 26:07.79 for 11th place (eight through 14 are Second Team All-League).
Helping Wayne State to its third consecutive runner-up finish at the conference meet were sophomore Dan Kapadia (Canton, Mich./Salem), sophomore Sam Breen (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven) and freshman Chris Tassen (Troy, Mich./Athens). Kapadia was 16th (26:20.67), while Breen was 18th (26:22.93) and Tassen was 37th (27:16.34).
Also competing for WSU were Dave Lucas (51st - 27:41.07), Vince Bechard (54th - 27:45.39), Nick Krol (68th - 28:14.82), Pat Webster (76th - 28:30.76), Omar Saidi (78th - 28:34.66), Shawn Gremban (107th - 29:27.82), Chris Johnson (109th - 29:36.75) and John Wurfel (131st - 30:48.70).
The next meet for Wayne State will be the NCAA Great Lakes Regional at SIU-Edwardsville on Saturday, Nov. 3 with a berth at the NCAA Championship at stake.
