Ishpeming, Mich. - The Wayne State University men's cross country team finished second out of 11 schools at the 2005 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship held on October 22 at Al Quaal in Ishpeming, Michigan.
It marks the third straight year WSU has finished in the top three and the seventh consecutive year, the Warriors have been in the top four. Head coach Rick Cummins was selected GLIAC Coach of the Year.
Grand Valley won the team title with 17 points, while Wayne State had 44 points. Behind WSU were Saginaw Valley (89), Hillsdale (108), Ashland (159), Northwood (161), Lake Superior (204), Michigan Tech (220), Ferris State (268), Gannon (298) and Mercyhurst (301).
GVSU's Nate Peck won the 8000m race in a time of 26:23.0. Wayne State had four of the top nine finishers led by redshirt freshman Abdullah Saleh (Dearborn, Mich./Fordson), who placed fifth in a time of 26:57.9.
Senior Justin Kessler (Ionia, Mich.) was sixth (26:58.3), while sophomore Kevin Christensen (Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield) was eighth (27:10.0). Junior Chris Mehay (New Baltimore, Mich./Anchor Bay) was ninth (27:11.3).
Also running well for WSU was junior Lance Jones (Saranac, Mich.), who placed 17th (16th in team scoring) with a time of 27:32.3.
Also competing for the Warriors were senior Matt Fecht (Warren, Mich./Mott) who placed 38th (28:11.4), sophomore Dave Lucas (Dearborn, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) who was 45th (28:28.5), and redshirt freshman Mike Delaney (Williamston, Mich.), who was 101st (30:41.6).
The next competition for Wayne State will be the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Nov. 5 at the Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich.
