BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - Wayne State's men's cross country team finished second at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional held at Ferris State's Katke Golf Course and qualified for the NCAA Championship in Chino, Calif., on Nov. 19. The Warriors totaled 54 points in the 10k course, behind Grand Valley (43 points) and ahead of Southern Indiana (60) and Saginaw Valley (105). The top four teams, plus the top two individuals not associated with one of the qualifying teams, earned bids to nationals.

The senior duo of Justin Kessler (Ionia, Mich.) and Matt Fecht (Warren, Mich./Mott) led the way for the team, placing fourth and fifth, respectively. Kessler crossed the tape in a time of 31:46.0 with Fecht right behind him at 31:50.3 to earn all-region honors.

Joining the seniors on the all-region team was junior Chris Mehay (New Baltimore, Mich./Anchor Bay) with an 11th-place time of 32:06.0 and sophomore Kevin Christensen (Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield) in 15th at 32:14.9.

Freshman Abdullah Saleh (Dearborn, Mich./Fordson) wrapped up the team scoring placing in the top 20 with a 32:31.2 time in 19th place.

Also running for Wayne State were Lance Jones (Saranac, Mich.) (33.10.7; 32nd place) and Dave Lucas (Dearborn, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) (33:31.6; 45th place).
