Allendale, Mich. - The Wayne State University women's basketball team (8-11 overall, 6-3 GLIAC) saw its four-game win streak come to an end at 10th-ranked Grand Valley (15-4 overall, 8-2 GLIAC) Thursday evening with a 73-50 setback in Allendale.
After the Warriors fell behind 4-2, they took the lead on a triple by sophomore Joy Nash (Muskegon, Mich.). Two possessions later, junior Nicole Rogers (Lansing, Mich./Everett) drained a shot from beyond the arc for an 8-4 advantage.
Following a GVSU bucket, sophomore Chastidy Miller (White Lake, Mich./Waterford Kettering) hit a jumper at the 12:36 mark for a 10-6 lead.
The Warriors led 12-9 at the 11:04 mark following a jumper by senior Cherita Smith (Grand Rapids, Mich./Union). The Lakers responded with a 15-0 run as the WSU went scoreless for 7:34. Freshman Brooke Bowers (Delphos, Ohio/Jefferson) ended the drought with a put back hoop with 3:30 left.
Wayne State pulled within seven at 28-21 as Nash made two free throws just before intermission.
The Warriors shot just 28.6 percent (8 for 28) in the first half, while GVSU made nine of 21 from the field for 42.9 percent.
A Smith jumper from the paint early in the second half made it a nine-point contest at 33-24 with 18:30 left. GVSU scored the next five points before back-to-back buckets by Rogers and Nash made it a 10-point game at 38-28.
Taushauna Churchwell hit consecutive triples for the hosts and WSU never was able to get the deficit under 12 the rest of the contest.
Nash led Wayne State with 14 points and five assists, while Rogers contributed 13 points and a team-best eight rebounds. Bowers added 10 points off the bench.
GVSU's Julia Braseth had a game-high 24 points and 11 rebounds.
Wayne State will conclude its weekend road trip with a 1 p.m. tip at Lake Superior on Saturday.
