Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. - The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (8-12 overall, 6-4 GLIAC) started strong Saturday afternoon at Lake Superior State University (14-5 overall, 9-2 GLIAC) but couldn't sustain the momentum in falling 80-62 at Cooper Gymnasium.
The Warriors raced out to a 5-0 in the first two minutes on a jumper by Monique George (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech) and a triple by sophomore Chastidy Miller (White Lake, Mich./Waterford Kettering).
After an LSSU bucket, WSU scored the next six points for an 11-2 advantage. Senior Cherita Smith (Grand Rapids, Mich./Union) made a three-pointer and sophomore guard Joy Nash (Muskegon, Mich.) followed with another triple.
The Warriors did not make another field goal until the 8:50 mark, a span of 7:48 as the host Lakers built a 23-16 lead. WSU had seven turnovers and missed seven shots from the floor during the drought.
WSU cut the deficit to seven at 31-24 on a triple by freshman Brooke Bowers (Delphos, Ohio/Jefferson) after LSSU had taken a 10-point lead twice at 29-19 and 31-21. The Lakers scored the next six points before another three-pointer by Bowers. A jumper by freshman Rebecca Meyer (Brighton, Mich.) was answered by a LSSU jumper. Smith hit a jumper before LSSU's Danielle Makins made two free throws just before intermission making the score 41-31 Lakers.
Lake Superior had a 17-point advantage at 50-33 with 16:58 left as the Lakers started the second half on a 9-2 run as WSU missed three of its first four field goal attempts.
A jumper by Smith and a triple by Rogers cut the deficit to 12 at 15:54 but LSSU followed with a 10-3 run and a 19-point lead at 60-41.
Wayne State was able to get within 11 at 60-49 with an 8-0 run that included back-to-back buckets by senior Ralphanee Peyton (Detroit, Mich./Cody) and Nash and three points by Miller. Lake Superior scored the next eight points before Bowers drained another three-pointer.
The Warriors never gave up and trailed by only eight at 70-62 with 2:57 left following a jumper by Bowers but were unable to score the rest of the contest and the host Lakers made all 10 of their free throw attempts.
Wayne State has two home games this coming week - Thursday versus Findlay (5:30 p.m.) and Saturday against Ashland (1 p.m.).
