Erie, Pa. - The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (10-13 overall, 8-5 GLIAC) suffered its first GLIAC South Division road loss of the season with a 78-63 setback at South Division leading Gannon University (17-5 overall, 11-2 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon.

The Warriors started strong with leads of 7-2 and 9-4 in the opening five minutes. Senior Ralphanee Peyton (Detroit, Mich./Cody) scored the first bucket of the game, and after GU had tied it, sophomore Chastidy Miller (White Lake, Mich./Waterford Kettering) scored from the paint. Sophomore guard Joy Nash (Muskegon, Mich.) had a conventional three-point play with a bucket and a foul shot and Peyton had another hoop.

The game tightened up and was tied at 11, 13 and 18 on a triple by Miller. The Lady Knights then went on a 20-9 run over the next seven minutes for an 11-point advantage with 74 seconds left before halftime. Nash split a pair from the foul line and the teams exchanged buckets in the final 35 seconds giving Gannon a 40-30 lead at intermission.

Wayne State shot 39.4 percent (13 of 33) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes compared to 57.1 percent (16 of 28) for Gannon. WSU did hold a 20-14 edge on the glass but committed 12 turnovers to nine for the Lady Knights.

Gannon started the second half on a 15-6 run to increase its lead to 19 at 55-36 with 16:08 remaining.

The Warriors were able to pull within 11 three different times, but on all three occasions Gannon made two free throws on its next possession. The Lady Knights were 10 of 10 from the foul line in the final 99 seconds.

Wayne State is third in the GLIAC South Division, two games behind second place Hillsdale with each squad playing twice this weekend then concluding the regular-season on Feb. 24 at HC.

The Warriors entertain Ferris State on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and Saginaw Valley on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Joy Nash had a team-high 17 points while Chastidy Miller contributed 16 points. Bethany Jury had a team-best 10 rebounds.

Chastidy Miller was six of six from the foul line to increase her season total to 104 free throws made becoming just the fifth person (sixth time) to make more than 100 foul shots in a season. Ebony Vincent is the only person to do it twice (1st with 125 in 2003-04 and fifth with 105 in 2002-03).
