Livonia, Mich. - The Wayne State University women's basketball team (1-1 overall) recorded a 61-35 road victory at Madonna University (2-8 overall) Tuesday night, an NAIA school in metro Detroit.
WSU junior Brooke Bowers (Delphos, Ohio/Jefferson) hit a triple 2:40 into the contest to knot the game at three as the Warriors missed their first three shots plus had a turnover on their first four possessions.
The Crusaders scored the next four points before a Jasmine McCall (Detroit, Mich./CMA) field goal, which started an 8-0 WSU run. Lindsey West (Royal Oak, Mich./Kimball), Chastidy Miller (White Lake, Mich./Waterford Kettering) and Bowers all made two-pointers during the run.
The game was tied at 12 following a pair of foul shots by MU's Kim Olech. WSU answered with five straight points on a triple by Miller and jumper from the paint by McCall.
WSU outscored the hosts 5-3 over the final 90 seconds for a 22-16 lead at intermission.
The Warriors shot 24.3 percent (9-37) from the floor in the first half including 15.8 percent (3-19) from beyond the arc. The Crusaders made four field goals in the opening 20 minutes on 23 attempts (17.4 percent) plus had 13 turnovers.
After MU's Katie Mount made a bucket in the first minute, WSU responded with a 16-0 run over the next 5:30 to grab a 38-18 lead. Four different Warriors scored during the spurt which included two triples by Bowers.
The hosts were able to get within 15 at 42-27 with nine minutes left but Wayne State scored the next four points on a basket by Miller and two free throws by Felicia Thomas (Kalamazoo, Mich./Central).
WSU had four players in double figures led by Miller's 14. Joy Nash (Muskegon, Mich.) and McCall each had 12 with Bowers adding 11.
Mount led Madonna with 12 points.
McCall had a game-high 14 rebounds for her first career double-double, while Nash dished out six assists.
Wayne State shot 42.4 percent (14-33) in the second half to finish at 32.9 percent (23-70) for the game. The Warrior defense held the Crusaders to 21.1 percent (4-19) in the second half and 19.0 percent (8-42) for the game.
The Warriors conclude their season-opening three-game road trip with a Sunday afternoon contest (1 p.m.) at Edinboro.
WSU has its home opener on Thursday, Dec. 4 against Michigan Tech. The game will be televised live by Comcast Channel 900 with Dave Zoran and Eric Pate serving as the commentators.
Notes:
Bowers has 99 three-pointers made, which ranks eighth all-time. She passed Wendy Winter (1991-95) who had 97 triples.
The Warriors are now 6-4 all-time vs. Madonna.
