DETROIT - The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (2-4 overall, 1-1 GLIAC) snapped a two-game losing streak with an 88-75 triumph over visiting Mercyhurst College (2-4 overall, 0-2 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon at the Matthaei.

The Warriors, who had not lead at halftime in any of their five games this season, started strong versus the Lakers scoring 13 of the game's first 18 points. Despite falling behind 3-0, WSU responded with an 8-0 run which included four consecutive points by sophomore Chastidy Miller (White Lake, Mich./Waterford Kettering), and buckets by junior Brittany White (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park) and sophomore Joy Nash (Muskegon, Mich.).

After a lay-up by MC's Julie Anderson, senior Cherita Smith (Grand Rapids, Mich./Union) scored on a fast break lay-up and freshman Brooke Bowers (Delphos, Ohio/Jefferson) drained a triple.

The Lakers pulled within four at 13-9 at the 13:11 mark, but WSU went on a 19-9 run for a 32-18 advantage with just under 4:30 remaining before intermission. Wayne State's lead remained in double digits until the 17:28 mark of the second half when MC's Priscila Nascimento made a three-point shot pulling the guests within nine at 43-34.

Mercyhurst cut the deficit to six twice (45-39 and 48-42) but Miller answered the first time with a fast break lay-up, and Bowers made a three-pointer the following time giving the Warriors a 51-42 advantage.

Wayne State made eight of its nine foul shot attempts over the 2:30 to secure the victory.

Nash recorded the first double-double by a Warrior this season with 11 points and a career-high 10 assists. Junior Nicole Rogers (Lansing, Mich./Everett) had career-highs in assists (6) and steals (7).

WSU concludes its three-game home stand on Saturday, Dec. 9 with a 1 p.m. tip-off against GLIAC rival Hillsdale.
