DETROIT - The Wayne State University women's basketball team (1-3 overall, 0-1 GLIAC) began conference play with a 62-55 setback to #19-Michigan Tech (3-1 overall, 1-0 GLIAC) Thursday evening at the Matthaei.
The Warriors started strong as Joy Nash (Muskegon, Mich.) scored on a triple on the game's opening possession. The Huskies answered with an 8-0 run before Jasmine McCall (Detroit, Mich./CMA) scored on a fast break lay-up to make it 8-5.
MTU scored the next five points before a jumper in the paint by Chastidy Miller (White Lake, Mich./Waterford Kettering) pulled WSU within six at 13-7.
The Warriors were within four (17-13) following a jumper by Brooke Bowers (Delphos, Ohio/Jefferson) with 8:42 remaining.
Four consecutive points by the Huskies preceded another jumper by Bowers. WSU then outscored the guests 7-5 over the final 4:20 cutting the MTU lead to four (26-22) at the intermission.
Bowers hit a jumper on the first possession of the second half making it a two-point game but Michigan Tech responded with back-to-back three pointers by Sarah Stream and Katie Wysocky.
Wayne State was within four at 40-36 following a fast break lay-up by McCall with 11:45 left, but MTU answered with a 10-2 run for a 50-38 lead with just over seven minutes remaining.
The Warriors held tough and were within five points (54-49) with a minute left following a triple by McCall. MTU's Danae Danen split a pair from the foul line and so did Katie Zimmerman seconds later for a seven point Huskie lead at 56-49.
A missed WSU jumper preceded two foul shots by Stream with 39 seconds left that sealed the road win for Michigan Tech.
Danen scored a game-high 18 points to lead four Huskies in double figures. Bowers had 15 points for the Warriors, while Lindsey West (Royal Oak, Mich./Kimball) and McCall had 14 and 13, respectively.
MTU won the game at the foul line making 14-of-23, while Wayne State was 0-for-4. The Warriors made six more field goals (26-20) and shot 42 percent (26-62) compared to the Huskies 37 percent (20-54).
West tied the WSU single-game record for blocked shots with seven, originally set by Jessica King on Jan. 30, 2003, vs. Rochester College.
Wayne State continues its home stand with a 1 p.m. tip-off on Saturday vs. Northern Michigan.
