Owensboro, Ky. - The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (3-5) dropped a 92-69 decision at Kentucky Wesleyan (8-1) Saturday afternoon.
The Warriors started slowly falling behind 10-0 in the first 3:42 before junior Nicole Rogers (Lansing, Mich./Everett) hit a jumper. The Panthers tallied five consecutive points until a Rogers' lay-up made it a 15-4 contest at the 14:46 mark.
Over the next 8:30, WSU went on a 21-16 run keyed by 12 points from sophomore Chastidy Miller (White Lake, Mich./Waterford Kettering) cutting the KWC lead to six at 31-25 with 6:11 left before intermission.
The Panthers finished the opening 20 minutes scoring 14 of the final 23 points of the half for a 45-34 lead at the break. Miller had 15 points at halftime on five-of-eight from the field including two-of-three from beyond the arc, while freshman Brooke Bowers (Delphos, Ohio/Jefferson) added seven points. LaTasha Henry led KWC with 13 first half points.
The hosts started strong in the second half recording 11 of the first 16 points for a 56-39 lead at the 13:58 mark.
The Warriors responded with a 9-0 run over the next 3:33 cutting the deficit to eight at 56-48. Junior Brittany White (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park) hit back-to-back lay-ups, and Bowers drained a triple before sophomore Joy Nash (Muskegon, Mich.) completed the run with two free throws.
WSU did not score for over two minutes as KWC regained a double-digit lead and the hosts never had less than a 13-point advantage the rest of the way.
Miller led Wayne State with a game-high 20 points, her fourth career 20+-point contest. Junior center Bethany Jury (Plymouth, Mich./Livonia Ladywood) contributed 11 points and tied Rogers for team high in rebounds with eight. Nash made all six of her foul shots as the Warriors shot 77.8 percent (14-18) from the line (their second best game from the charity stripe this season).
KWC shot 56.9 percent (33-58) from the field including nine of 19 from three-point territory.
Wayne State has its final home game for nearly a month this Tuesday when the Screaming Eagles of Southern Indiana visit the Matthaei. Following Tuesday's encounter, WSU will play its next seven games away from Detroit.
