BAY CITY, Mich. - Four members of the Wayne State University women's basketball squad were named to the GLIAC All-Academic team. Senior Kristen Rogers (Lansing, Mich./Everett) earned her third straight academic honor, while junior Bethany Mesko (Traverse City, Mich./Central) picked up her second. Juniors Nicole Rogers (Lansing, Mich./Everett) and Cherita Smith (Grand Rapids, Mich./Union) were selected to the team for the first time.
K. Rogers was named to the South Division All-Conference Second Team and finished her career with 1056 points, ranking 13th all-time. This season she averaged 10.5 points and 2.8 assists per game. She was named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term gpa 3.5+) her first six semesters, including a perfect 4.00 during the Winter 2004 and Fall 2005 semesters, and named to the Coach's Honor Roll (term gpa 3.0-3.49) for Winter 2005. A mathematics major, K. Rogers is also a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Mesko averaged 4.0 points and 3.1 rebounds a game in 2005-06. She led the team with 13 points and nine rebounds against Hillsdale on Feb. 25. The finance major was named to the Athletic Director's Honor five times, including four perfect 4.0 semesters.
N. Rogers was the team's leading rebounder, ranking 13th in the conference at 5.9 a contest. The forward led the team in rebounding 11 times and scoring in four games. N. Rogers is majoring in liberal arts and was named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll twice and the Coach's Honor Roll for Winter 2005.
Smith led the team in scoring at 13.1 ppg and was second in the GLIAC with an average of 2.52 steals per game. She also scored in double digits 21 times, including 12 of the final 13 contests. Smith, who is majoring in psychology, was named to the Coach's Honor Roll four times.
To be eligible for GLIAC All-Academic status a student-athlete must have: a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0 or greater (on a 4.0 scale); must be a starter or key reserve; and must not be a freshman or first-year transfer.
