Five members of the 2006-07 Wayne State University women's basketball squad were named to the GLIAC All-Academic team. Senior Bethany Mesko (Traverse City, Mich./Central) earned her third straight academic honor, while classmate Cherita Smith (Grand Rapids, Mich./Union) picked up her second academic award. Junior Nicole Rogers (Lansing, Mich./Everett) was also a second time honoree while sophomores Jessica Howard (W. Bloomfield, Mich.) and Chastidy Miller (White Lake, Mich./Waterford Kettering) were selected to the team for the first time.
Mesko averaged 4.1 points per game in 2006-07. She scored a game-high 17 points in a win against Hillsdale. The accounting major was named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term gpa 3.5+) seven times, including five perfect 4.0 semesters.
Smith, who started 19 games in 2006-07, scored 212 points as a senior to finish her career with 846 points. Smith, who is majoring in psychology, was named to the Coach's Honor Roll five times.
Rogers was voted to the GLIAC South Division All-Conference Second Team and was a CoSIDA Academic All-District nominee. She started 23 games and led the squad in offensive rebounds (76), defensive rebounds (110) and total rebounds. A finance major, she was twice named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll and three times to the Coach's Honor Roll (term gpa 3.0-3.49).
Howard appeared in 12 games, while starting the season opener at Missouri-Rolla. She scored a season-high six points in playoff game at Hillsdale along with recording a season-best three rebounds. A marketing major, Howard was named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term gpa 3.5+) for Winter 2006 and Fall 2006.
Miller started every game but season opener in 2006-07. She led the team in field goals made, steals, points and scoring average and was a CoSIDA Academic All-District nominee. Her 119 free throws made is third in school history and she set the school single-season record with 165 free throws attempted. A pre-law major, Miller was named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll for Fall 2006, and the Coach's Honor Roll for Winter 2006.
To be eligible for GLIAC All-Academic status a student-athlete must have: a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0 or greater (on a 4.0 scale); must be a starter or key reserve; and must not be a freshman or first-year transfer.
