The Wayne State women's basketball team has added three student-athletes to the program as Stephanie Hoskin (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King), Karlisa Love (Detroit, Mich./Crockett) and Felicia Thomas (Kalamazoo, Mich./Central) inked National Letters of Intent to attend WSU and play basketball for the Warriors beginning this fall. WSU head coach Gloria Bradley made the announcement which also included the addition of transfer Brittany Smith from Syracuse.
Hoskin, a 5-7 guard, is a 2008 graduate of Martin Luther King High School. She was a Detroit Free Press Honorable Mention All-Detroit selection as a senior. Hoskin helped the Crusaders and coach William Winfield to a district title in 2008 after winning the 2006-07 Class A state title with a 23-1 record. The daughter of Mary Benson and Larry Hoskin, she plans to major in criminal justice
Love, a 5-11 forward, is a 2008 graduate of Detroit Crockett Technical High School. She was a four-year letterwinner for coach Robert Giles and the Rockets. Love earned Detroit Free Press Honorable Mention All-Detroit honors as a senior after averaging 11.5 points, 8.9 rebounds, two blocks and 1.8 steals per game. She scored 19 points in a 46-36 win on January 22, 2008 over CMA after earlier recording 29 points in an 83-63 win over Chadsey on January 8. She was voted MVP of the PSL Southwest Division. Love grabbed 21 rebounds in win over Osborn on Dec. 7, 2007. She finished the 2007-08 season with 219 points, 169 rebounds (including 93 offensive), 38 blocked shots and 34 steals. Love tallied four blocked shots in a game four times and had five steals in a game twice. A 2007-08 MHSAA Scholar-Athlete nominee, she served as a team captain in basketball in 2007-08. The daughter of Lisa Love and Christopher Greason, she plans to major in computer science.
Thomas, a 5-9 guard,is a 2008 graduate of Kalamazoo Central High School. She earned three varsity letters in basketball for the Giants and coach Jaime Gordon. Thomas was voted 2007-08 Southwest Michigan Athletic Conference Player of the Year after averaging 17 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals per game. She was selected to the All-State Class A Fourth Team as well as to the Kalamazoo Gazette's All-Area team. Thomas had 22 points and five steals in 44-32 win on Feb. 14, 2008, over Battle Creek Central. She served as a basketball team captain and was also the KCHS class president. The daughter of Kirsten Hairston and David Thomas, she plans to major in graphic design.
Smith, a 6-2 forward, appeared in 21 games, starting 13 times for Syracuse in 2005-06. She missed all of the 2006-07 season with an injury, then transferred to WSU in January 2008. Smith scored 123 points and grabbed 111 rebounds for the Orange scoring a career-high 13 points against Georgetown.
Last year, the Warriors reached the semifinals of the GLIAC tournament and have six returning letterwinners for the 2008-09 campaign which begins on Nov. 20 with an in-region game at defending national champion Northern Kentucky University.
