EDINBORO GAME STORYLINES
Wayne State's season-opening three game road trip has its final stop on Sunday at Edinboro. The Warriors have split a pair of non-conference games with No. 1 ranked Northern Kentucky and Madonna University.
The Fighting Scots own a 3-0 series lead. Only one of the losses was handed to Gloria Bradley. WSU battled but came up short in a two-point decision at Edinboro in her first season on the bench, 2000-01. That loss also marks the most recent meeting between the teams.
The series began in 1988-89 under former head coach Karen Hall in her only season as coach. Edinboro edged the Warriors 80-77.
Edinboro has only outscored Wayne State by a total of 14 points in the three games.
RECENT RESULTS
The Warriors traveled to Northern Kentucky University on Nov. 20. They were caught on their heels by the No. 1 ranked Norse.
Senior Chastidy Miller scored from inside on the game's first possession then split a pair of foul shots 90 seconds later to knot the game at three. The Norse scored seven straight points before a pair of free throws by Joy Nash made it a five-point game.
NKU had a 10-2 run before Jasmine McCall and Brooke Bowers each sank two free throws to cut the deficit to 20-11. Six straight points by the hosts preceded a lay-up by McCall.
Bowers drained a triple from beyond the arc and Miller made the second of two foul shot attempts making the score 28-17 with just over seven minutes remaining in the first half.
The Norse had a 16-7 run to end the opening 20 minutes.
The Warriors were able to get within 17 just twice in the second half.
Miller scored a team-best 16 points, while Bowers scored 15 and added a team-high six rebounds. McCall contributed 11 points, five rebounds and five steals.
Wayne State recorded a 61-35 road victory at Madonna University, an NAIA school in metro Detroit, on Nov. 25.
Bowers hit a triple 2:40 into the contest to knot the game at three as the Warriors missed their first three shots plus had a turnover on their first four possessions.
The game was tied at 12 following a pair of foul shots by MU's Kim Olech. WSU answered with five straight points on a triple by Miller and jumper from the paint by McCall.
WSU outscored the hosts 5-3 over the final 90 seconds for a 22-16 lead at intermission.
The Warriors shot 24.3 percent (9-37) from the floor in the first half including 15.8 percent (3-19) from beyond the arc. The Crusaders made four field goals in the opening 20 minutes on 23 attempts (17.4 percent), plus had 13 turnovers.
After MU's Katie Mount made a bucket in the first minute, WSU responded with a 16-0 run over the next 5:30 to grab a 38-18 lead. Four different Warriors scored during the spurt which included two triples by Bowers.
WSU had four players in double figures led by Miller's 14. Nash and McCall each had 12 with Bowers adding 11.
Mount led Madonna with 12 points.
McCall had a game-high 14 rebounds for her first career double-double, while Nash dished out six assists.
Wayne State shot 42.4 percent (14-33) in the second half to finish at 32.9 percent (23-70) for the game. The Warrior defense held the Crusaders to 19.0 percent (8-42) for the game.
ON THE BENCH
Gloria Bradley is in her ninth season at WSU and 15th season overall with records of 102-118 and 216-187, respectively. Bradley has only faced Edinboro once with a record of 0-1 against the Fighting Scots.
Head coach Stan Swank is in his 22nd season. He has compiled a 361-230 mark in 20 seasons. Prior to Edinboro Swank coached Parkland Junior College (Ill.) to a record of 104-20.
Swank is currently tied for 26th among active Division II coaches in career wins.
NOTEWORTHY
Bowers moved into sole possession of eighth place in three-pointers made in a career with 99 after hitting three of nine at Madonna.
COUNTDOWN TO 1000
Miller is closing in on the WSU 1,000 point club. She currently has 962 career points. Miller, who has averaged 11.7 points per game in her career, will become the 14th player in WSU history to accumulate 1,000 career points.
SCOUTING EDINBORO
Scott Swank has led the team to 16 winning seasons in his 21-year tenure, including 2007-08. Edinboro averaged 70.7 points per game last year, a plus 4.3 scoring margin, on its way to a 17-10 record.
Edinboro was ranked No. 4 in the PSAC Western Division preseason poll for 2008-09.
Samantha Reimer, the leading scorer from a year ago when she averaged 19.9 ppg as a sophomore, has scored in double figures in all three games thus year totaling 80 points.
Another junior, forward Kelsey Conklin averaged 14.3 points per game last season along with 6.5 rebounds while recording 53 steals. This year, Conklin is averaging 23.0 ppg and 9.3 boards per game.
In addition to the junior standouts, Edinboro has received quality minutes from Miki Cerchiaro. Cerchiaro was named PSAC Freshman of the Week following solid play against Southern Indiana where she finished one rebound shy of a double-double with 19 points and nine rebounds.
