Women's Fencing Records 2-1 Mark At Detroit Duals

DETROIT - The Wayne State University women's fencing team began the duals portion of its 2007-08 schedule compiling a 2-1 mark Sunday at the Detroit Mercy Duals.

The Warriors defeated Detroit (20-6) and Michigan State (17-10), but fell to Michigan (15-12).

Senior Justyna Konczalska (Innsbruck, Austria/BORG Innsbruck) had an 8-0 record in epee to lead WSU. Redshirt freshman Emanuela Bercea (Dearborn, Mich.) had a 6-2 mark in the epee, while Sam Barc (Clinton Twp., Mich./Fraser) was 1-7.

In sabre competition, Karolina Budna went undefeated at 7-0. Sophomore Ann Bartoszewicz (Macomb, Mich./Eisenhower) had a 6-1 record while freshman Anna Kotov (W. Bloomfield, Mich./Walled Lake Western) had a 2-5 mark.

WSU had just two competitors in the foil -- freshmen Rachel Broderick (Fraser, Mich.) and Samantha Strassburg (New Baltimore, Mich./Anchor Bay). Broderick had a 4-4 record, while Strassburg also won four of her eight bouts.

The Warriors will be idle until competing in the New York University Duals on Saturday, Jan. 26.
