Notre Dame, Ind. - The Wayne State University women's fencing squad competed at the Midwest Fencing Conference (MFC) Championship on Saturday, Feb. 25, bringing home one gold medal.
Junior Anna Garina won the MFC epee title defeating Ohio State's Kaela Brendler (15-7) in the championship bout. Garina recorded a perfect competition winning all 10 of her bouts. Justyna Konczalska, a sophomore epeeist, was seeded third but lost in the second round of direct elimination to OSU's Alexandra Obrazcova (15-14) to finish the competition in 10th place. Alyse Schneider, a sophomore, placed 28th.
Lindsey Howard, a junior foilist, went 5-1 during pool play and defeated Michigan's Michelle Leach, 15-2, in the second round of direct elimination. Howard lost a quarterfinal bout, 15-11, to the eventual champion, Notre Dame's Emilie Prot to finish sixth.
Sophomore Kasia Kuzniak, competing in the sabre, was injured in her second direct elimination bout after compiling a 6-0 record in pool play. Kuzniak forfeited her bout and was classified ninth.
The Warriors are back in action next weekend, March 4, at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championship in Cleveland (hosted by Cleveland State). WSU will wrap up its season March 16-19 at the NCAA Championship hosted by Rice University in Houston, Texas.
