Women's Fencing Has Four Top-10 Performances At MFCC.

South Bend, Ind. - Members of the Wayne State University women's fencing squad participated on Sunday, Feb. 27 in the individual competition at the 2005 Midwest Fencing Conference Championship being hosted by the University of Notre Dame.

In the women's epee, two Warriors finished in a tie-for-third, while freshman Alyse Schneider moved up eight places from her initial seeding of 21st to a tie-for-13th.

Both Anna Garina and Anna Vinnikov compiled 6-0 records in pool play, and both won their round of 16 and quarterfinal matches before falling in the semifinals.

Garina defeated Shariah Pratt of Cleveland State, 15-6, and Courtney DuBois of Northwestern, 15-6. Eventual champion Kerry Walton of Notre Dame defeated Garina 14-11.

Vinnikov recorded 15-8 wins over Natalie Bustamante of Notre Dame and Rebecca Chimahusky of Notre Dame. Amy Orlando of the Fighting Irish edged Vinnikov 15-13 in the semifinals. Orlando also ousted Schneider, 15-11, in the round of 16.

In the women's sabre, Jinelle Lawson finished ninth after being seeded 11th. She had a 5-1 record in pool play before falling 15-11 to Northwestern's Sophie Eustus.

Janelle Jones moved up from a 22nd place seeding to 16th place after compiling a 2-4 mark in pool play and then falling to Detroit's Roberta Sims, 15-6, in the round of 16.

Alicia Chmielewski had a 3-3 mark in pool play and finished in a tie-for-18th, while Tiffany Perkins was seeded 32nd and after recording a 2-4 record finished 24th.

In the women's foil, Lindsey Howard finished seventh after being seeded eighth. She had a 5-1 record in pool play and defeated Notre Dame's Tiffany Muller 15-2 in the round of 16 before falling to second-seeded Jessica Florendo of Northwestern 15-8 in the quarterfinals.

MaryBeth Ketko moved from 21st place to 15th after compiling a 3-3 mark in pool play and falling to top seeded Andrea Ament of Notre Dame 15-2 in the round of 16.

Stacy Otremba had a 2-3 record in pool play and finished 20th after being seeded 27th.

Some members of the Warrior squad will be competing in the NCAA Midwest Regional being hosted by Wayne State next Sunday (March 6) at the Matthaei beginning at 9 a.m.
