NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Wayne State University women's fencing team competed at the Midwest Fencing Championships at the University of Notre Dame this past weekend. The team portion was held on Saturday, March 6, and the individual competition on Sunday, March 7.

Twelve teams participated at the event with the Warriors placing fourth in the women's events with 430 points. Ohio State won the team title with 490 points and was followed by Notre Dame (485) and Northwestern (475). In the men's and women's combined scores, WSU was third.

With only two of the three roster spots filled, the epeé team of Anna Garina and Anna Vinnikov faced an uphill battle. The team would start every round down 2-0 (or 3-0 if the match went at least eight bouts), due to forfeit. The Warriors defeated Purdue, 5-2, in the quarterfinals and won 5-2 over Michigan in the semis. Vinnikov trailed 4-1 in the final bout of the championship round before coming back to win 5-4 helping WSU earn the weapon title over Northwestern.

The foil team of Lindsey Howard, Kathryn Hefner and Cory Johnson defeated Detroit to claim fifth place while the sabre team of Jinelle Lawson, Janelle Jones and Alicia Chmielewski finished sixth.

In the individual competition held on Sunday, Garina and Vinnikov placed first and second, respectively in the epeé. Garina narrowly edged teammate Vinnikov in the finals 15-11. Freshman Lindsey Howard placed seventh in the foil.

The fencing team will travel to Northwestern University for the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships on Sunday, March 14.
