Waltham, Mass. - Sophomore Anna Garina (Kiev, Ukraine) is in first place in the women's epee after the opening day of the 2004 NCAA Championship being hosted by Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass.
Fourteen of the 23 round-robin bouts were contested on Thursday with the final nine bouts being held on Friday for all three women's weapons.
After the round-robin, the top four fencers in each event will fence direct elimination 15-touch bouts for first, second, third and fourth place.
Garina compiled a 13-1 mark on Thursday recording 67 touches scored compared to 31 touches received. She leads 2002 NCAA Champion and two-time All-American Kerry Walton of Notre Dame, who compiled a 12-2 record on Thursday. Defending national champion Katarzyna Trzopek of Penn State is in eighth place.
Junior Anna Vinnikov (Ma'alot, Israel) is in 22nd place in the women's eppe after recording a 3-11 mark. She had 47 touches scored compared to 58 touches received.
An institution's place finish in the championships will be based on points earned by each individual. A team will be awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes for the duration of the championships.
